Hello Verizon; Goodbye Chad?

Verizon recently closed its deal to purchase Alltel, one of its major competitors in the wireless communications business. This deal probably spells the end for those annoying "My Circle" ads Alltel has been running for more than a year now. I say good riddance.

Those live-action and animated ads feature a character known as Chad, a "good guy" who represents Alltel, and four unnamed "bad guys" who represent four of its competitors, one of them being Verizon. In various scenarios, the four villains have been depicted as trying to stop Chad from propagating Alltel cell phones and its "My Circle" calling plan. However, by the end of each commercial, Chad has foiled their plot and left them dumbfounded and frustrated.

Those ads are still running, despite the deal having been completed. It is likely that the Alltel name will disappear later this year, as the company is absorbed into the Verizon family. In the meantime, Alltel will continue to be operated as a separate entity. However, I suspect that those "My Circle" commercials will at least be altered in the short term to remove the Verizon antagonist. Hopefully, Chad will soon follow.
