Baseball Teams for (Part of) a Season

Major League Baseball's spring training is now underway, but don't get too excited about any of the teams on display in Florida's Grapefruit League and Arizona's Cactus League. That's because none of those teams will be around by the time the pennant races start heating up in the boiling August sun.

Sure, the team names and uniforms will still be the same, and so will most of the managers and coaches. However, the majority of team rosters will have gone through drastic changes by then. Some teams will hardly resemble those bearing the same names on opening day.

That's why I find it so hard to get interested in baseball during this time of year. Why should I root for a team when I can reasonably assume that some of its key players will be wearing different uniforms in several more months?

It reminds me of those pickup softball games all the kids on my block would play during the carefree summers of our youth. Sometimes we would play several games a day, with a different set of teammates each time.

Of course, that was okay – we were just kids and no one was paying out his or her hard-earned money to watch us play. Considering the kind of money Major Baseball charges its fans, one would think its teams could provide a little continuity – at least for a season.
