Dont Make a Show of It

The Bible warns us to "… let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation." – James 5:12 (KJV). When communicating our intentions to do or not do something, we shouldn't make a big show or demonstration out of it.

Simply say yes or no and then keep your word. Anything superfluous could lead to conflict and hard feelings. Besides, in most cases, you don't owe anyone a long drawn-out explanation. Sometimes you don't need to say anything at all – just do what you need to do and be done with it.

For me, excessive ranting or raving has indeed led to regrettable outcomes. I've sometimes been talked into doing something I really didn't want to do -- or not doing something I greatly desired to do -- just because I felt the need to drive my point home with a sledgehammer. Had I kept my mouth shut, I could easily have avoided such consequences. We would all be better off if we took James' admonition to heart and stuck with simple, honest answers.
