Ten Things You Need Not Worry About

I am constantly amazed by some of the things that otherwise intelligent people often worry about. Some of it is stuff that doesn't have a snowball's chance in you-know-where of ever happening.

Therefore, I would like to (hopefully) set some people's minds at ease about a few of them. I am here to tell you that the following ten things will never happen, despite many a lost nights' sleep over them on the part of some individuals:
1) A major U.S. city being hit by an intercontinental ballistic missile bearing a nuclear warhead. Other types of nuclear disasters are possible, but this ain't gonna happen. We won't be seeing any mushroom clouds over any part of the U.S. That's because any potential perpetrator knows that such action would lead to it being wiped off the face of the earth.

2) The black helicopters coming to get us. Stuff like that only happens in novels and movies.

3) The end of winter, spring, summer, and fall as we know them. While I do believe in the general concepts of global warming and climate change, a transformation of this magnitude will never occur as long as the earth exists. My source: God Himself – He says so in His Word.

4) The U.S. government taking everyone's guns. This is only a figment of the imagination of the deeply paranoid (and a convenient fundraising tool for the NRA). The right of individual Americans to bear arms is settled constitutional law, so there's nothing President Obama or any future liberal president could do about it, even if he wanted to.

5) Government completely taking over the U.S. healthcare system. Not gonna happen. Yes, there will eventually be healthcare reform that will include some government involvement. However, the American healthcare colossus is much too large and complicated to be processed through a single payer system.

6) One world government. Good grief! The folks in Europe can't even make the EU work properly. How is some entity (supposedly originating from that continent) going to govern the entire world? And can you imagine radical followers of Islam, for example, submitting to some other type of authority? For crying out loud, their own governments can't even manage them now. Ask the president of Pakistan. I also can't see any U.S. rednecks allowing someone from Europe to boss them around.

7) Israel being wiped off the face of the earth. Such an occurrence only exists in the genocidal fantasies of lunatics like Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Fortunately, he and everyone else who entertains such ambitions will never see them come to pass. The Israelites are God's chosen people and He would therefore never allow them to be completely annihilated.

8) The splintering of the United States. While the U.S. will likely not add any additional states, it won't lose any either. Despite our regional and individual differences, never again will any state or group of states even attempt to secede, no matter what may come. For one thing, the Civil War was too painful of a lesson from history to risk repeating. For the other, any given state would have too much to lose by splitting off from the union.

9) An extraterrestrial invasion. Even if there is intelligent life on other planets, I doubt that those creatures would have any interest in inheriting any of our problems and catching any of our diseases. They probably have enough of their own to deal with already.

10) The "big one" hitting the west coast of the U.S.  While it's as interesting as it is scary to speculate about, it just doesn't seem like something that could really happen. Excuse me, but I can't envision a huge chunk of the America's Pacific coast just disappearing into the ocean. I'm well aware of the fact that some seismologists have been warning about the possibility of a catastrophic earthquake in that region for years, but I can't help thinking that someone is exaggerating here. I base my reasoning on similar exaggerations that I've heard in the past. For example, remember how New Orleans was "destroyed" by hurricane Katrina?

Obviously, some people will continue to worry about the above items. But, as I have pointed out, there is absolutely no need to. Like one of my former bosses used to say, "I could be wrong, but I don't think so."

You mean while I'm laying awake all night worrying about tomorrow's meeting, there are people awake worrying about things like their city being hit by an intercontinental ballistic missile? Makes my problems seem small in comparison, maybe tonight I will sleep.  Seriously Terry, I'm glad you got it off your chest. Good article!

Yes, Brianna, people worry about all kinds of things that will never happen. I even heard tonight that there are people who actually think Obama's proposed healthcare plan includes a provision for euthenasia of the elderly. They would be better off worrying about that meeting. :-)  I'm glad you liked the article.

"I could be wrong."

I hope not Terry. These were all reassuring issues. I hope all the people who have sleepless nights worrying over problems as such read this article so they can once again get a good night's sleep. "I know I will now" Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

Keep well Terry

Great article. Well done.

A popular cliché about this is " you die if you worry you die if you don't"

I really didn't think people worried about this stuff anymore. Then again, so many people believe so much . . . stuff, it's not too hard to imagine. Just mention '2012' to someone who 'believes' and they start to hyperventilate.

Good stuff here. Thanks.

Terry a really good article which states exactly what scripture states, why worry about tomorrow, etc. I myself believe what will be will be, it has already been ordained to be. Now to worry is to be totally enveloped by what is happening to the extent you cannot function. You are totally concerned that you will fall into or be trapped by something. That is much different then being aware, alert, educated about possibilities or things that are happening, perhaps right in our midst or under our very nose. If you don't prepare for a hurricane, even though it may never hit, you may just suffer the possibilities. Are you worried, within human reason. Are you paranoid, depends on the extent of invovlement and actions you take. Some of the issues you mention are well within possibility of happening, yet people dare not conceive it in this nation. Impossible, ridiculous, insane. Yet if one applies common sense we can say without folly as people who consider, ponder, think could it have been like this in the days of Noah? I could read an artilce like this saying, what happens if Noah is right and the pundits saying see how worried these fools are. yes even their every own families laughing at them and saying don;t be a fool and follow after Noah. Is it that many, even while professing are blinded, have a strong delusion, will never accept even the things being stated by their own leaders, casting it off as mere rhetoric, not looking at the realities of what is being considered, what is happening that they care not investigate, look into, see? So to a believer meaningless to worry for they know what is happening. To the unbeliever, meaningless because they could care less but to the border line, doubter, worries. Good job, food for thought.

Don't talk like that about the EU!  I like  Italy, the UK and Spain.  I'm sure alot of people do (who have gone there at least.)   I think the USA is sinking in its power anyway.

1) The threat of subsequent retaliatory annihilation (or just simple suicide bombing) certainly would not faze 'true believers' of various flavours around the world. Religion can make people do very evil things without regard for the consequences in this (arguably the only) reality, since they are convinced that their actions will gain them honour in the 'next life'.

2) The existence of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, or 'Night Stalkers', is a documented fact and admitted by the National Guard, ever since they were exposed in the Waco debacle in 1995 - there ARE covert missions and 'training exercises' carried out in the U.S. every week, officials do not dispute this. Also pertinent would be a quick review of all the laws passed in the last decade; you have no rights left - if the government wants you to disappear, you will.

3) I would have passed on this one if you hadn't revealed your 'source'. Why are you using as a supposedly scientific authority a book which claims to include a history of an impossible flood that has no basis in the geological record, and whose main protagonist (that's gawd) thinks goats' babies will be different colours depending on what their parents see at conception (Genesis 30:37), thinks some birds and insects have four feet (Leviticus 11:20-23), and that unicorns and fiery serpents are real (Deuteronomy 33:17)?

4 and 5) I don't have enough perspective on these to comment.

6) You're assuming the rednecks will realize who is pulling their strings, or even awaken to the fact that their strings are being pulled in the first place. This already happens to almost everyone in the developed world, we are all programmed and influenced by media giants and government control of information (as much as they can, at least - the internet still scares them which is why they are now moving to lock it down and make it more like TV).

7) There's nothing special about Israel that would protect them if someone crazy enough did manage to get their hands on a nuke or something similar - they have a superb intelligence network which helps keep them protected now, but if something did go down, your god won't poke a hand through the clouds and swat away missiles or flick away suicide bombers for them.

8) If an administration tries to erode civil rights too quickly and blatantly (instead of the steady progress they've been making over the years), then it's not inconceivable that there could be resistance. It is however extremely unlikely that any notable portion of the armed forces would join the seceders, so any resistance will probably be crushed quickly without too much fuss. The only possible scenario I can imagine where an intense civil war would come about, is as a means of/justification for mass extermination, but there are easier ways to accomplish this.

9) You've got this one right, for sure - it is near-impossible to predict how an extraterrestrial would respond to our discovery, but the chances of them even being able to communicate with them in any way seems remote; if there was any hostility from them it would probably be quick and global (think terraforming or something), without any hope of defence/retaliation. Oh, and they certainly don't pop down every other weekend to poke around in some redneck's butt. :p

10) For many of the people hit by Katrina, do you really think it made much difference to them that it was 'just' a hurricane, instead of an earthquake? I agree with your overall point though.

I hope this response doesn't come across as too hostile, I just get riled up by false declarations of knowledge/absolutes, when the truth is often much more relevant and interesting, and worth knowing. ;)

Have fun,

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear.
