A person's ego can really take a beating sometimes. However, many of these beatings are brought on by one's own indiscretions. If you're like me, and have an interest in protecting your ego, follow the 12 guidelines below:

1) Don't brag or show off.

2) Limit your use of the words 'always' and 'never' (as they have a tendency to haunt you).

3) Don't take unnecessary chances.

4) Don't make predictions. An ancient Chinese proverb goes something like this: "He who lives by the crystal ball eats a lot of glass."

5) Don't try to impress people by using words that you really don't understand the meaning of.

6) Don't compete against people who are smarter and more talented than you.

7) Don't point the finger of blame at someone else, even when they are at fault.

8) Be willing to accept the less prestigious job, assignment, position, etc.

9) Don't complain, unless the object of your complaint is a threat to life, limb, or health.

10) Don't vent your frustration or disappointment in public.

11) No matter how tough the going gets, remain calm and keep your composure.

12) Avoid anger like a deadly disease.
