Why Every American Should Pay Taxes

I think it's a shame that nearly half of American households pay no income taxes, as was revealed by recent news reports. This being the case makes it easier for Congress to raise taxes, as 47% of the population will remain silent because it does not affect them. In essence, they are getting government services for free, while the other 53% has to pay for them.

While I don't think we should return to colonial days when only landowners could vote, I do think they were onto something back then. Why should people who have no personal investment in our government be allowed to vote? Isn't that representation without taxation? I think these are questions we all really need to ponder.

For sure, there would be more accountability and fewer tax increases if only those who paid federal income taxes could vote. It's easy for people to vote themselves all kinds of goodies when they don't have to pay for any of them. We wouldn't have these problems if all Americans paid at least a little in taxes.

Think of the situation this way: The difference between taxpayers and non-taxpayers is like the difference between owners and renters. Which of the two groups is most likely to take better care of a house? In this case, the house is our country.

"More than 60% of all U.S. companies paid no federal tax at all during the boom years of 1996 to 2000, the General Accounting Office reports.

"In 2000 alone, 94% of all U.S. corporations paid less than 5% of their total income in corporate taxes, the GAO said in a report released Friday. Among the largest corporations -- the 1% of all corporations that owns 93% of all corporate assets -- 82% paid less than 5% of their income in taxes."

Well, yeah, I think all U.S. corporations should pay taxes as well. Same principle applies.

In keeping with your line of reasoning... I think corporations who pay no taxes should not be allowed to give corporate money to politicians or lobby in Washington.

What you say has some meaning, but not a lot to me. You talk of income taxes, but what about all the other taxes that EVERYONE pays; excise (Cars), sales, social security and Medicare. Everybody pays some or all of these taxes and the poor pay a disproportionate amount in relation to their income. Everyone pays some tax, except maybe some of the large corporations. I believe that GE paid no tax, no tax for many years, even though they were one of the most profitable corporations in the world. So please do some deeper thinking before you foist some new tax on the poor.

Robert, please do some deeper thinking before commenting on my articles. The subject of this article is income taxes. If you want to talk about other kinds of taxes, do so in your own articles.
