Limbaugh Wedding Irks Extremists

Rush Limbaugh's wedding this past weekend has irked extremists on both sides of the political aisle. Admittedly, this wasn't the typical Saturday afternoon wedding in June. It was Limbaugh's fourth go at tying the knot (and I use that word loosely), this time to a woman who is 26 years his junior.

However, what was most curious about it was Limbaugh's choice of a wedding singer. Limbaugh's pick was none other than rock legend Elton John. Yes, that's the same Elton John who is politically ultra-liberal, openly gay, and is married to another man. Contrast that to the far right Limbaugh who strongly opposes gay marriage. They say politics makes strange bedfellows, but weddings?

However, it often takes an event like this to bring out some people's true colors. In this case, the colors are butt-ugly. As I've scoured the Web to find out more information about Limbaugh's latest marriage, I have encountered scores of nasty comments left on various sites by both liberal and conservative wing nuts.

To these people, those who hold opposing political views are not just wrong, they're evil. To them, all politics is personal. Anyone who does not adhere to their political dogma is, at best, subhuman and not worth their time, or, at worst, a diabolical creature who is comparable to the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Charles Manson, the Boston Strangler, the Wolfman, and Dracula.

Since the news the weekend's events has gotten out, Elton John has been excoriated by liberal wackos. "How could he be such a traitor?," some have asked. Others have resolved to quit buying his CDs and stop attending his concerts because he has "made nice with such a disgusting bigot."

Of course, Limbaugh has taken it on the chin as well from conservative fanatics. We have those who now question Limbaugh's right-wing credentials for "fraternizing with a leftist pig." I've even read some comments that insinuate that Limbaugh is a closet bisexual.

It's sad that there are people in the world who are so caught up in their personal ideology that they would say such things. Sadder yet is the fact that they would actually believe that stuff. However, they might have a point about Elton John and Rush Limbaugh being guilty of something here. Indeed, they were both guilty of behaving like adults.

It's all become crazy, hasn't it, Terry? How have we gotten to the point where we can't be friends with anyone we disagree with??

I grew up in a very religiously restrictive environment where we were not to mix with anyone who wasn't one of the group. My parents got out of that group when I was 13 and I cannot go back to that way of thinking. As an adult, I like to have friends from many different viewpoints and backgrounds, racially and ideologically. I've learned so much from other faiths and ethnic viewpoints. This current trend of polarization is dangerous. I believe if we take it to it's final end, it is what will destroy our country.

Yes, Jean, it's really sad that things have gotten to this point. I remember when Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill used to sit down for dinner together after heated political battles. That kind of thing is becoming more and more rare in today's polorized climate.

There's nothing wrong with telling someone exactly what you think of their political and social views. I do it all time, as you probably know. However, when it starts getting personal, it crosses the line. Many people today (especially younger folks) don't seem to understand that, probably because they've grown up with cable TV, talk radio, and the Internet. I remember life before any of those things - when public discourse as a lot more gentile.

Limbaugh complaining about extremists is the pot calling the kettle black.

Limbaugh was complaining about extremists? Where did you read that? You certainly didn't find it in my article. Did you actually read my article, Portia?

This article made very good reading for me. I'm always inspired by people who behave outside of the narrow confines what people's prejudices presume them to be.

Hi Marijo, I'm not sure if there are more of them now or if the Internet is just exposing us to more of them.
