Stressful Vacations

I saw a news story the other night that indicated something I've suspected for a long time vacations can be stressful for many people. For various reasons, including the anxiety about being away from their jobs too long and the guilt over leaving their co-workers in the lurch, people sometimes find vacations to be more worrisome than relaxing. I guess lots of folks have become paranoid over all the recent layoffs and are concerned that their jobs might be there when they get back.

While I don't have that particular worry, my problem with vacations is the fact that I have to do all the planning and I'm constantly afraid that I'm going to forget (or have forgotten) some important detail. I loved vacations when I was a child, but that's because someone else was responsible for doing all the planning then. Not so, now. For that reason, I don't take many real vacations anymore. I still use all my vacation time, but I usually stay within a couple of hours' driving distance of my home during my time off.

That seems a bit of a shame, Terry! Surely it's possible to take a simpler vacation that doesn't need so much planning?
