An Outrageous Tax Proposal

One Virginia state delegate has apparently lost his mind. In the recently-convened 2011 session of the Virginia General Assembly, Delegate Joe Morrissey is proposing a ridiculous 20-cent tax on plastic grocery bags. That’s right – he wants grocery store customers to pay a 20-cent tax on each plastic bag they take home! He is obviously motivated by his radical environmentalism. This is in spite of the fact that many people, including myself, often recycle plastic bags for other uses. Hopefully, the Virginia House of Delegates, which is dominated by Republicans, will have enough common sense to reject this outrageous bill.
Liberal Democrats should join the GOP in voting against it. This new tax, if enacted, would be very regressive, hitting up the poor for a much higher percentage of their income that it would others. Like most Republicans, I hate almost every tax, whether regressive or progressive. But liberals, who generally love taxing and spending, claim to at least be opposed to regressive taxes. In Virginia, we’ll soon see if they are the true advocates for the poor that they claim to be. Or perhaps, we’ll discover that, like Del. Morrissey, radical environmentalism is a more important issue to them.
