Why I Oppose "Caylee's Law"

A new bill was recently introduced in Florida’s legislature. It’s called “Caylee’s Law”, in memory of Caylee Anthony, the two-year old who was found dead three years after her mother, Casey Anthony, waited more than 30 days to report her missing. Casey was recently acquitted of the child’s murder and could not be charged with any crime for her delay in reporting the child as missing.
However, I do not favor this bill. If I were a Florida lawmaker, I would vote against it. That’s because it is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction that will not punish Casey Anthony. It should have been on the books already, but it’s too late to pass it now. Casey Anthony has already gotten away with what she did. The only thing this bill would do, if it became law, would be to punish someone else for a lesser crime than Anthony has already gotten away with, and I’m not talking about murder.
How fair would it be to punish Jane Doe for waiting two days to report her child missing when Casey Anthony has already gotten away with waiting more than 30 days to report hers missing? It wouldn’t be fair at all. That’s why I oppose this unjust bill – Mr O’Reilly notwithstanding.
