Boohooing over Neo-Prohibition Evokes No Sympathy from Me

Recently, there was an article in my local newspaper from someone who works in the alcoholic beverage industry. In the article, this person complained about the so-called “neo-prohibition,” in which more and more restrictions are being placed on alcohol use by various states and local communities. As I read this article, I started to look around for a violin. I mean it's really hard to sympathize with their position when I consider the more ghastly restrictions and burdens our society places on those who smoke or wish to use pot. At least you can still drink in most of the nation’s finest restaurants, and alcohol can still be advertised on TV.

The same cannot be said for cigarettes. Smokers are now treated like pariahs at most restaurants. Cigarette ads were banned from the airwaves more than 40 years ago, but I can’t sit down to watch a football game without being bombarded with dozens of inane beer commercials. And where's that Surgeon General's warning on a can of beer? This is none, of course. But even the warning is no longer good enough for cigarettes, as the government is now trying to force ghoulish photos of dead and diseased bodies onto packs of cigarettes. Also, keep in mind that people are still thrown in jail for simply using or possessing pot, even though it is no more dangerous than alcohol. Now there's the real prohibition if you want to talk about one.
