Parallels Between Gingrich 2012 and Nixon 1968

There seems to be some striking parallels between Newt Gingrich’s 2012 run for the presidency and that of Richard Nixon in 1968. Will Gingrich end up getting the same results as did Nixon? Only time will tell. Nixon not only won the Republican presidential nomination in 1968, but also went on to be elected the 37th President of the United States. Considering the things his candidacy now has in common with Nixon’s 1968 campaign, one shouldn’t be too quick to count Gingrich out. Listed below are some of the commonalities between Gingrich now and Nixon in 1968:

1) Both were once left for dead politically, only to strongly and unexpectedly re-emerge. Most pundits thought Nixon was out of politics for good after the former Vice President was soundly defeated by Pat Brown in the 1962 California gubernatorial election. Gingrich, of course, left Congress in disgrace over ethical issues, following his term as Speaker of the House.

2) Nixon’s chief primary opponent in 1968 was then-Michigan governor George Romney.  Gingrich’s chief primary opponent this year is also a guy named Romney: George’s son, Mitt.

3) Nixon was considered very intelligent, but not very personable. Ditto Newt Gingrich.

4) Nixon was known have little affection for the media, and the feeling was apparently mutual. The same can be said about Gingrich.

5) During his 1968 run, Nixon had held a higher political office than any of his primary opponents. Gingrich has held a higher political office than any of his current primary opponents.

6) In 1968, Nixon was able to grab the role of elder statesman during a turbulent time in our nation. Likewise, Gingrich has (so far) been able create a perception of himself as an elder statesman during a time of great economic uncertainty in our country.

Excellent comparisons. I also have a comparative story. One that puts Carter and Obama in similar fates.

Interesting parallels Terry. Newt is on the rise and time will tell if he can hang on to his grasp as one of the leaders in the poles. Romney is getting edgy and losing his edge. Time will also tell who will be the worst president of the last half century, Carter or Obama.

William, thanks for reading and commenting. I think Romney is starting to get nervious because of Gingrich's latest run in the polls.

Excellent article Terry. I have flip-flopped more this year than at any time in the past. Back before anyone announced they were running, I wrote Newt a couple of emails encouraging him to run. But I decided he was not going to so I began whooping it up for Herman Cain. When Perry came into the fray, I left Cain who was falling behind, and got on the Perry bandwagon. Newt came on the scene but messed up right at the start, but I soon became discouraged with Perry and got behind Cain again. But, when Newt began to jump up in the polls, I again started boosting him.

There is no doubt , nor has there been, that Gingrich is by far the most qualified and will make the best president of the lot. He is notorious for speaking outeven on things which are unpopular, but he understands the needs of this nation completely.

Joel, thanks for reading and commenting. While I'm technically still backing Bachmann, I like Cain and Gingrich almost as much. Any one of those three would be okay with me. Right now, it looks like Gingrich will be the one.
